Understanding Time Zones

The world is divided into 24 primary time zones, each roughly 15 degrees of longitude wide, corresponding to one hour of difference. The reference point is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is the time at the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) in Greenwich, London.

Time zones are expressed as offsets from UTC — for example, UTC+5:30 means a location is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of UTC (as is India), while UTC-8 means 8 hours behind (as is the US Pacific coast).

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Many countries observe Daylight Saving Time, advancing clocks by one hour during summer months to make better use of daylight. This means the effective UTC offset for a city can change twice a year. For example, New York is UTC-5 in winter (EST) but UTC-4 in summer (EDT). Always check whether DST is in effect when planning international calls or meetings.

Half-Hour and Quarter-Hour Time Zones

Not all time zones are whole-hour offsets. India (UTC+5:30), Sri Lanka (UTC+5:30), Afghanistan (UTC+4:30), Iran (UTC+3:30), and Nepal (UTC+5:45) all use non-standard offsets. Australia's Northern Territory and South Australia use UTC+9:30 and UTC+10:30 respectively.

Tips for Scheduling Across Time Zones

  • Use UTC as a common reference when coordinating with people in multiple countries.
  • Beware of DST transitions — they do not happen on the same date in all countries.
  • Check public holidays — even if the time matches, a public holiday may mean your contact is unavailable.
  • The International Date Line runs roughly along 180° longitude — crossing it means jumping a full calendar day.
